How to Paint Effectively From Photos, and Other Dirty Little Secrets

After years of experimentation with photos and photo composing in my paintings, I am now offering this 5 Day workshop revealing how to avoid the pitfalls of working from them, and take advantage of working from 2D to 2D.
Understand how to build light and form into your images, and get exact proportions. How to build atmosphere in as well! Photo distortion is a real thing, and how to recognize and correct it. We will work in a step-by-step process; starting with underpaintings and working to a highly resolved finish. Please provide one digital photo, from which you would like to work. This class will be socially distant, with has a 2-3 person limit.

Looking forward to teaching this new class.

Fall 2019 The Classical Oil Portrait

Registration going on NOW for this Portrait Painting course, designed to take you through the different stages of the classically painted portrait. With helpful demonstrations and one-to-one teaching, we will de-mystify the classical painting process, starting with a charcoal
drawing created with sight-size measuring (preferred method of the Florence Academy of Art).
This will be transferred to a toned canvas where we will complete the underpainting in browns (Brunaille). Next, we will create a small color study (Bozzetto) in preparation for our final portrait. Limited palette colors will be covered, as well as basic head and facial anatomy. There will also be discussions about the subtleties of capturing facial expression. This
is a nine week course, with a live model. Class size is limited to five students (with a minimum of three students).
